Old Hindi Movies
The timeless classics from Bollywood are many to make an Indian proud. The old Hindi movies were simple but made with great detail in spite of the lack of advanced technology in those days. It is no wonder those Bollywood movies of the yesteryears are still much sought after.
The old Hindi movies like Anarkali, Baiju Bawara, Tajmahal and many more had music composed by prominent musicians who were the masters of Indian classical music. They used the Indian classical music to compose the old Hindi movie songs, a practice that made both the musicians and their compositions eternal.
The masters of the old Hindi movies, like V Shantaram, musicians like Naushad, Madan Mohan and singers like Mohammad Rafi, Kishore Kumar and Mahendra Kapoor are unfortunately not with us anymore. We are lucky to have the legends Lata Mangeshkar and Manna Dey still with us who still inspire the younger generation and would continue to inspire many more generations to come.
What made those old Hindi movies classical? There was no technology, no exposures or even kisses or hugging on the silver screen, still the movies made history and those who understand the Indian culture and heritage have those old Hindi movies in their movie collection, treasured and stored for their coming generations. Why?
The simple answer is the hard work of all the people involved in the making of an old Hindi movie. The writers had great scripts and the directors went over and beyond using their imaginations to bring in the effects in the movies that were truly exceptional and amazing. The singers used to practice their songs for days and weeks before recording them. Even a singer like Lata Mangeshkar used to practice her song for days before she would record her final version. The movie actors like Prithviraj Kapoor and Raj Kapoor, Meena Kumari and Mumtaz and so many others had immense talents. The directors always had their originality in the movies. They never had remakes like we do today!
As a matter of fact, it was the success of the old Hindi movies that laid the foundation of the today’s Bollywood. The success of the old Hindi movies spawned many more hopeful producers expecting to get a quick hit! This is the reason, today’s Bollywood makes the largest number of movies in the world yet only a few are worth even a mention. The success of the stories in the old Hindi movies was misunderstood by the new directors who started making movies using the same story lines and formats of the movies. The result is what we all call the Bollywood masala movies!
