The New Era of Indian Film Music

| |

The Indian music industry has been churning out numbers like there is no tomorrow since it’s inception. The age of the sixties and the seventies is called the golden period for the Indian music that was primarily a part of the Bollywood movie industry, there have been a few periods when the film music did not make us feel so proud.

As a matter of fact, we would be talking more about the Indian film music than the Indian classical music per se. The real roots of the Indian classical music run hundreds of years deep and it’s quality is incomparable with any other type o music in the world.

The Indian film music has often been inspired by the Indian classical music for very fruitful and melodious renditions. The credit for the success of the film music of the seventies goes more often than not to the inspiration drawn from the Indian classical music.

Unfortunately, the late eighties and later for almost a couple of decades, the Indian film music lost it’s charm largely because of the music directors. The singers like Lata Mangeshkar, Asha and Kishore Kumar were still around to lend their experience but there were no lyricists or music directors who could write or compose to use the talent pool of the singers.

Till the beginning of 2000 there were not many singers who brought out their own private albums. Most of the singers sang only for the movies and therefore their talent was more or less tied to what the music directors of that period would allow them to sing.

Fortunately, lately enough Bollywood has managed to bring up some very talented music directors and singers who have restored the glory of the Indian music around the world AR Rehman is one such music director and singer who has consistently produced excellent music scores including some sung by his own self. AR Rehman has used the technology to the best. His khwajaaji number in Jodha Akbar is a great example of his talent. There have been some great music composed by Ismail Darbar Vishal and Shekhar and a few others. Needless to say, a few like Himesh Reshamiya tried to stigmatize the Indian music again but could not really succeed.

Talking about the singers, AR Rehman himself is a very knowledgable singer. Sonu Nigam has started sounding really mature and has quite a range in his voice too.

In the last year or so, Kailash Kher has become famous with his excellent Sufi voice quality songs that have wonderful lyrics composed in a simple but very melodious music. Kailash has taken the Indian film music by storm and has come out with a few of his own private albums.

Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, the son of Ustaad Nussarat Fateh Ali Khan from
Pakistan has also made his mark by his excellent voice quality and singing talent.

We hope the new generation will have these great singers and musicians to learn from.
